Andrew Jenkin is a professional watercolour artist, author, illustrator and art tutor based in North Wales. Inspired by landscapes, buildings, water and the changing character of the natural environment, Andrew’s work combines strong observational drawing with the freedom and unpredictability that make watercolour such an expressive medium.
Alongside creating and exhibiting his own work, Andrew teaches watercolour to artists of all abilities through classes, workshops, online tuition and residential art retreats. His approach is practical and encouraging, helping painters understand the fundamentals of watercolour while developing the confidence to loosen up, experiment and find their own way of painting.

Andrew Jenkin is a professional watercolour artist and experienced art tutor based in North Wales. For more than 25 years, he has explored the possibilities – and occasional unpredictability – of watercolour, developing a loose and expressive approach to painting landscapes, buildings and the natural world.
Andrew began as a pen and ink draughtsman with an interest in architectural subjects, gradually introducing watercolour washes into his work. Before long, the colour took over. Today, it is the unpredictable nature of watercolour that continues to fascinate him.
Rather than trying to control every mark, Andrew believes in working with the paint and water, allowing washes to move, colours to mingle and unexpected results to become part of the finished painting.
Inspired by the Landscapes of North Wales
Living and painting in North Wales provides Andrew with an endless source of inspiration. Mountains, coastline, castles, villages, woodland and moorland all find their way into his work, alongside a fascination with the history and folklore of the area.
As a landscape painter, Andrew is particularly drawn to places with character – from dramatic Welsh scenery to old buildings and forgotten ruins. These subjects provide the perfect opportunity to explore light, atmosphere, colour and the expressive qualities of watercolour.
Learn Watercolour with Andrew
Andrew teaches watercolour to artists of all abilities, from complete beginners who haven’t picked up a brush since school to experienced painters looking to develop a particular technique or find a new direction in their work.
His teaching combines clear structure and practical demonstrations with plenty of encouragement to experiment. Beginners learn the foundations – understanding paint and water, colour mixing, drawing, washes and essential techniques – while more experienced students are encouraged to loosen up, explore new ideas and gradually develop their own individual style.
And mistakes are very much allowed.

Watercolour can be an unforgiving medium and Andrew believes that becoming a better painter isn’t about producing a perfect painting every time. It’s about understanding what the paint can do, experimenting, learning what went wrong and becoming confident enough to try again.
Classes are friendly and supportive, with step-by-step demonstrations, individual guidance and plenty of encouragement. Whether you’re learning how to control your first wash or trying to become less cautious with your painting, the aim is to help you enjoy watercolour and become more confident in the way you use it.
