Andrew Jenkin | Biography

Andrew Jenkin is an artist, author and illustrator. He works mainly in watercolour, depicting British landscapes and illustrating scenes from British folklore.

Andrew was born in Cheshire in 1976, spent most of his life in Yorkshire, and now lives in North Wales. In 2012 he was shortlisted for ‘Artist of the Year’ by Artist & Illustrators magazine.

He produces original artwork for commissions and galleries, and sells greetings cards, books and printed work in regular solo exhibitions and to various retail outlets.

As an illustrator he has designed images for book illustrations, CD covers, retail displays, museum exhibits, tourist information panels and furniture upholstery.

Andrew has written and illustrated two books about British folklore; ‘The History & Legends of Castle Hill, Huddersfield’ (2017) and ‘The Curse of the Lambton Worm’ (2009). He has also illustrated two books about Honley, the West Yorkshire village where he grew up, and ‘Tapestry’, a children’s fairytale written by Richard King and published by Silverhill (2014).

In 2016 his work was featured in an article in Welsh Border Life magazine, leading to exhibitions of landscape paintings in Shropshire.

He has taught watercolour painting for over 15 years, and in 2021 he featured on BBC1’s ‘The Apprentice’, teaching the contestants how to lead a watercolour painting class on a tour of Snowdonia.

He runs regular watercolour classes in North Wales and Northern England, and demonstrates his methods and techniques to art societies throughout the UK. He has written articles about watercolour painting for ‘Paint’ magazine. During lockdown, he started filming watercolour demonstrations for online tuition, and this is still ongoing.

He was Head Tutor at North Light Gallery Art School in Huddersfield until moving to Wales in 2010. He was Secretary of the Huddersfield Art Society from 2004-09, and Vice-President 2009-10, and is still a member.
