About Andrew

I’ve been painting in watercolours for 25 years, and I have 20 years of experience in teaching watercolours and other mediums.

During that time, I’ve taught a wide range of students, from beginners to experienced painters, and a huge range of subject matter, including landscapes, buildings, figures, portraits, flowers, still-life and abstracts. I’ve always tried to keep an open mind and be versatile when guiding students in their chosen field of painting, helping them to branch out and explore new areas whilst staying grounded in the basic principles of art.

My own style of painting is loose, and I have also worked previously in a more controlled, photo-realistic style. My tuition videos demonstrate both methods, from controlled to loose methods of painting. I would encourage you to try both methods before committing to one style – in fact, I would encourage you to always develop your style, and experiment with new approaches throughout your painting career!

Here's how the tuition works :

Every week

You'll receive a new set of instructional video tutorials, backed up with one-to-one personal support.

It's a two-way process

I will send you weekly video tutorials and other information, and you can send me your results for review via WhatsApp (either at various stages or the finished painting). In between these videos, I'll help you to make progress on your own work.

Take it in your own time

You don't have to watch every video, or paint every week.

Before, during, or after your painting, you can contact me at any time for feedback via WhatsApp.

FAQs

I’ll send weekly videos, but we can speed up or slow down depending on how often you’re painting and how quickly you progress.

You can follow the instructional video, then apply your new skills to painting a new image. I’ll be there all the way to guide you through your chosen image.

Take it in your own time – you might only have the opportunity to paint once a week, or you might be able to paint several times a week. My tuition will match your pace.

Typically we’ll talk about your painting once a week, but you can ask advice as many times as you like – so if you’re really struggling, I’ll be there more often to give guidance.

I’ll send a list of recommended materials, so if you’re a complete beginner with no materials, I’ll give advice on what to buy and where to buy from.

If you already have some equipment, we’ll start working with that straight away, and you can gradually add items as and when they’re needed.

I’m flexible about what you’re using, so the materials cost should stay low. As you advance, you may choose to buy better quality items, and I can then give advice about what to buy.

We’ll pause the tuition, your payments will stop for that time period, and we can pick up again when you’re ready.

If you’re new to watercolours, it would be best to follow the instructional videos closely.

Once you’ve got to grips with the techniques, I would encourage my students to start going in their own direction with some guidance from me.

If you’re an experienced painter, we can discuss various options to take your painting into new territory and advance your knowledge, skill and style.
My videos cover the following :

‘Landscape Elements’ course, covering Skies, Water, Mountains, Trees, Buildings – these all progress from easy to hard, and gradually transition from careful controlled painting to a loose style.

‘Figures & Wildlife’ course – these all progress from easy to hard, and gradually transition from careful controlled painting to a loose style.

‘Beyond Realism’ course, studying 19th & 20th century artists to learn how they moved away from realism into abstract painting. The artists we look at are Monet, Cezanne, Seurat, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Munch, Klimt, Matisse, Picasso, Mondrian & Kandinsky. We cherry-pick the most innovative aspects of each artist, with a view to adding this practise to our own painting.

We can also tackle any additional subject matter you might be interested in.
